Blood Collection kit content
Lumegen sell the kits at cost price. One package of BC kits contains:
- 20 x plastic tubes with a laboratory paper strip
- 20 x stickers to label the tubes
- 20 x sterile hypodermic needles for toe pricking
Choose how to send your parcel. If you’re in a hurry (1-3 days delivery), we suggest courier services at only R50 to R150 per parcel (depending on the area). We will choose the cheapest option unless you have your own preference.
hOw to send your samples:
- The blood on the paper strip must be dry before closing the lid of the tube.
- The submission form must be completed with detailed contact info of the sender and info of the samples – clear identity/ring numbers and species of each bird.
- If possible, print your proof of payment and include it with your submission form.

- Write the bird’s identification (ring no or name) on the small sticker provided and paste it on the collection tube.
- Hold the bird and its claws steady to ensure free access to the bird’s claw/toe. If necessary, use a soft towel to wrap the bird while holding it.
- If you clean the bird’s toe with alcohol or any other disinfectant, make sure you wipe it dry before pricking the toe otherwise it will affect the test results.
- Use the sterile needle in the kit and prick the bird’s toe just above the nail. It is important to use an individual needle for each bird. A small drop of blood should appear in a few seconds.
- Open the collection tube and remove the paper strip. Always hold only the top part of the strip protruding the tube. Never touch the bottom part of the paper strip.
- Press the bottom part of the strip against the drop of blood and make sure the blood is soaked into the paper. Don’t smear the blood over the paper. The blood must be concentrated on one area.
- Insert the paper strip in the collection tube and leave the lid open to air dry the specimen. Let it dry completely (it can take from a few minutes to a few hours depending on the humidity). Never use heat (direct sunlight or blow drier) to dry the sample!
- Once the samples have dried, make sure the tubes’ lids are locked properly. It makes a click sound. If the paper strips fall out of the tubes during shipping, the samples are ruined and can’t be used for testing.
- Place the samples into a bubble-wrapped envelope together with the completed submission form and proof of payment and send it to Lumegen Laboratories. Make sure the information on the submission form corresponds to the information on the tube label.
How to send your samples:
It is recommended to send samples via courier. For only R50 to R150 (depending on your area) we provide a courier service, in co-operation with an established courier company, to all our South African clients. The package will be picked up at your door-step. Phone Lumegen Laboratories at tel. 018 175 0973 to make a courier booking once your samples are ready to be collected. You don’t pay the courier directly. We’ll send you an invoice for the courier costs.

For first time users it’s important to complete the Owner/Breeder section completely and accurately so that detailed contact info are available and that results can be sent confidentially. First-time users will receive a client ID when results are sent. This client ID can be used as reference when you do electronic bank transfers to Lumegen Laboratories.
Provide your unique Bird ID (ring number or any unambiguous identification you use for the bird) as well as the species of each bird. It’s crucial for the accuracy of the tests to determine the species of the bird as the sex-associated genes differs between the various bird species. Also clearly indicate what type of test you request for each bird (either or both tests).
Complete the form using permanent ink (not pencil) and save a copy for your own record.
Attach the proof of payment along with the form.
